Oxfam at Eye on Palestine

Lezing
Gent

For over 100,000 Palestinian families, the olive tree is not just an agricultural asset – it is a symbol of resilience and steadfastness in the face of adversity. Olives make up 25% of the agricultural income in Palestine, and the annual harvest sustains entire communities. This year's harvest faces unprecedented threats due to intensified settler violence, Israeli-imposed access restrictions, a spike in the number of trees killed, and the systematic denial of agricultural rights to Palestinian farmers.

Oxfam and the civil society community have major concerns about the potential for extreme violence and bloodshed at the hands of illegal Israeli settlers as this year’s much depended upon olive harvest officially started in the West Bank. In the current context of impunity around escalating violence against Palestinians and farming communities, within an incredibly tense environment under a brutal military occupation, there is a critical need to put the international spotlight on the harvest.

The audience will be able to hear first-hand from Al-Reef for Investment & Agricultural Marketing, Oxfam's agricultural partner about the olive harvest season and the current challenges faced by the Palestinian farmers today. After this presentation, there will be space to ask questions and interact with said partner, followed by a reception.

You can find more information about this event organized by Eye On Palestine here, a platform of cultural players and civil society organisations from Ghent, who want to visualise the Palestinian issue through art in various disciplines with room for reflection during debates and lectures.
